چکیده

In order to provide a reliable service, a video server must be able to reconstruct lost information during disk failure. We focus in this paper on reliability schemes that add redundancy within the server. We study two redundancy-based alternatives: mirroring-based schemes and parity-based schemes. We analyze in this paper these two alternatives and propose their adequate data layouts. We then compare them in terms of the server performance (throughput) and the costs of a single stream. Our results show that mirroring-based reliability is more cost e ective than parity-based reliability. We obtain the, at rst glance, surprising result that a server that uses mirroring, which doubles the storage requirement, has lower per stream costs than a server that uses parity-based reliability.

Performance and Reliability Study for Distributed Video Servers: Mirroring or Parity?

We study video server performance and reliability. We classify several reliability schemes based on the redundancy technique used (mirroring vs. parity) and on the distribution granularity of redundant data. Then, we propose for each scheme its adequate data layout. To calculate the server reliability, we apply discrete modeling based on Markov chains. Further, we focus on the trade-off between...

Modeling and Performance Comparison of Reliability Strategies for Distributed Video Servers

Large scale video servers are typically based on disk arrays that comprise multiple nodes and many hard disks. Due to the large number of components, disk arrays are susceptible to disk and node failures that can affect the server reliability. Therefore, fault-tolerance must be already addressed in the design of the video server. For fault-tolerance, we consider parity-based as well as mirrorin...

A Novel Replica Placement Strategy for Video Servers

Mirroring-based reliability as compared to parity-based reliability signi cantly simpli es the design and the implementation of video servers, since in case of failure mirroring does not require any synchronization of reads or decoding to reconstruct the lost video data. While mirroring doubles the amount of storage volume required, the steep decrease of the cost of magnetic disk storage makes ...

Storage Replication and Layout in Video-on-Demand Servers

We propose and analyze an architecture for storage servers in large Video on Demand (VoD) systems. We describe a method for distributing the collection of titles among the levels of the storage hierarchy, based on estimates of the mean demand for each title. The resulting distribution minimizes cost for a given level of performance. Since high availability is desirable in VoD systems, we consid...

High Availability in Clustered Multimedia Servers

Clustered multimedia servers, consisting of interconnected nodes and disks, have been proposed for large scale servers, that are capable of supporting multiple concurrent streams which access the video objects stored in the server. As the number of disks and nodes in the cluster increases, so does the probability of a failure. With data striped across all disks in a cluster, the failure of a si...
